In room and pillar mining, the most common type of underground coal mining, coal seams are mined by a continuous miner that cuts a network of "rooms" into the seam.

Van Lear, Kentucky Home of the Coal Miners' Museum
2019-7-13 Van Lear, Kentucky, was incorporated in 1912 in Johnson County. Named for Van Lear Black, a director of Consolidation Coal Company, the town owes its existence to the entrepreneurial efforts of John Caldwell Calhoun Mayo, born in Pike County, Kentucky, who taught in a one-room school near the confluence of Miller’s Creek and Sorghum Hollow.

2010-1-16 In 1956, Peabody Coal Company became partners with W. G. Duncan Coal Company for a new mine in Muhlenberg County and River Queen mine was born. This new mine was located west of Central City, Kentucky and mostly in an area bounded by State Highway 70 on the North, County Road 175 on the West and the Western Kentucky Parkway on the South.
